A talented group of seven junior sailors from the U.S. Virgin Islands recently traveled to Florida to represent the territory at the sixteenth annual Halloween Howler Regatta, held on the waters of Biscayne Bay in Miami. The regional contingent delivered strong performances across the board against competitive international and American fleets.

Leading the charge for the Virgin Islands was St. Thomas sailor Finn Hodgins, who captured a podium spot by finishing second overall in the prestigious Championship Fleet. Hodgins concluded the weekend regatta with 18 points, finishing just behind overall regatta winner Jaiden Strickon, who secured the top spot with nine points.

The Halloween Howler Regatta is widely recognized as a premier developmental event for young sailors, drawing top Optimist and youth competitors from across North America and the Caribbean. Racing in Biscayne Bay provides young sailors with crucial exposure to diverse tactical conditions, variable breezes, and large starting lines that differ from standard home-water training.

Sailing remains a core sporting tradition throughout the Virgin Islands archipelago, where youth from both the British and U.S. territories frequently train, compete, and share a passion for competitive maritime sport. Junior development programs across the islands have consistently produced world-class talent, serving as the training ground for regional champions and future Olympic hopefuls.

The successful weekend in South Florida reinforces the effectiveness of grassroots sailing instruction in the region. Local sailing enthusiasts and coaches continue to emphasize regional and international travel for young sailors, ensuring that emerging talent gains the competitive experience required to thrive on the global stage.

With the winter racing circuit getting underway, Virgin Islands junior sailors are expected to maintain their rigorous training schedules as they prepare for upcoming Caribbean regattas and overseas championships in the months ahead.
