USVI U20 Team Heads to BVI
The U.S. Virgin Islands U20 men’s national team will travel to the British Virgin Islands on Jan. 14 for a five-day training camp and a series of international friendlies against the BVI U20 side. The camp is designed to evaluate players, build team cohesion and finalise selections ahead of a tournament trip to Nicaragua in February.
Virgin Islands U20 men’s national team will arrive in the British Virgin Islands on Jan. 14 for a five-day training camp and a series of international friendly matches against the BVI U20 men’s national team, the U.S. Virgin Islands Soccer Federation (USVISF) announced. The camp forms a central part of USVISF’s preparations as the program evaluates and develops its U20 player pool ahead of upcoming international competition.
Coaches will use the period to assess players in a competitive environment while strengthening team chemistry and improving tactical understanding. Assistant Technical Director Dante Nicholas will travel with the team and provide leadership and technical oversight throughout the camp.
Nicholas emphasised the immediate goals for the staff: “Essentially, this camp is for the coaching staff to evaluate and solidify the U20 group that will be traveling to Nicaragua in February. The goal is to see whether players who we are seeing for the first time are up to the standard we want to set, and to see if players who have previously been part of the national setup can rise to the challenge and fight for another opportunity to represent the country.” Nicholas also underscored the squad’s balance of youth and experience: “We have a group that includes players who competed in the U15 Concacaf Championship this past summer, and this camp will expose them to a higher level of competition within the U20 talent pool.
At the same time, we have older players who are pushing for a place on the senior national team, which is the next step after the U20 tournament. This camp will be eye-opening for them and will give all players a clear understanding of what their next step is in terms of football.” For BVI residents, the visit offers several local benefits: an opportunity for home-grown players to test themselves against regional opposition, a chance for fans to watch international-level youth football, and a stimulus to local coaching and development conversations.
Friendly fixtures like these also strengthen ties between neighbouring federations and provide a practical pathway for talent identification across the region. The USVISF said the camp represents an important milestone in preparing the next generation of USVI footballers for international competition.
Results from the camp and friendlies will feed directly into final selections for the team’s February trip to Nicaragua.
