The University of the Virgin Islands has officially announced the appointment of Shaquana Miller as its new athletics director, successfully filling a crucial leadership role as the new academic year gets underway. Miller takes over the position following a transitional phase that began earlier this year.

The role became vacant in early January after former athletics director Karen Carty departed the institution after serving for two and a half years. Following Carty's departure, the department was guided on an interim basis by two long-standing department figures: sports information director and facilities manager Shaquille Richardson, alongside senior women's leader and administration specialist Donna Williams-Andrews.

Both staff members maintained day-to-day operations and supported student-athletes during the national search for a permanent successor. As the new head of athletics, Miller will oversee the university's intercollegiate programmes, department staff, coaching personnel, and facility operations.

Her appointment is expected to provide fresh vision and stability to UVI's athletic department as it seeks to elevate its competitive standing and expand student-athlete recruitment. The development is of notable interest across the wider Virgin Islands archipelago. UVI serves as a key higher-education and collegiate athletics hub for students and sports enthusiasts throughout the region, including talent from the British Virgin Islands who frequently pursue academic and sporting pathways in the neighbouring territory.

Miller's tenure begins as regional institutions continue to place increased emphasis on athletic development, collegiate scholarships, and student wellness, positioning UVI for renewed momentum across its sports roster in the coming seasons.
