People's Leadership Movement (PLM) leader Mark Vanterpool has declared that residents across the Virgin Islands are signaling a strong desire for real change, as the newly formed political group continues ramping up preparations for the next general election. Vanterpool delivered the remarks following the PLM's inaugural general meeting, which was held on Thursday evening at the organization's Road Town headquarters.
According to party organizers, the event attracted an enthusiastic turnout representing Tortola, the Sister Islands, and the Territory's Spanish-speaking community. Expressing renewed energy upon returning to the political front lines, Vanterpool noted that engaging directly with residents confirmed the public's appetite for fresh leadership and practical solutions.
He stated that the hope and passion displayed by attendees underscored a collective readiness to move the Territory in a better direction. During an open-floor session, attendees were invited to voice the most critical issues currently affecting their daily lives. A wide array of community challenges was raised, with significant emphasis placed on the rising cost of living, high electricity bills, recurring public water shortages, and the scarcity of affordable housing.
Residents also highlighted urgent needs surrounding job creation, broader economic opportunities, infrastructure upgrades, healthcare quality, education standards, and youth development, alongside calls for enhanced governance and accountability from public officials. Vanterpool stated that his return to active politics is focused on listening to residents and addressing these longstanding concerns.
He noted that the feedback collected during the general meeting will directly guide the formulation of the PLM's official policy platform and strategic priorities. In addition to community discussions, party executives provided updates on the ongoing establishment of District Committees across all nine political districts.
Organizers used the forum to encourage young people and first-time voters to register and actively participate in shaping the Territory's democratic future. Addressing inquiries regarding election candidates, the PLM stated that candidate vetting and discussions remain underway. The movement confirmed that no individual candidates have yet been formally ratified through its verification process, with official announcements expected in the near future.
