People's Leadership Movement (PLM) leader Mark Vanterpool has declared his intention to contest the Fourth District seat in the upcoming general election, pledging to transform Road Town into a fully modernised capital city. Vanterpool, a veteran politician who previously served several terms representing District Four, confirmed his candidacy during a recent interview on ZBVI Radio.
He explained that his decision to return to active politics came after receiving persistent encouragement from constituents who want to see revitalisation across the district. According to Vanterpool, his vision extends well beyond the commercial centre of Road Town to encompass surrounding communities such as Long Bush, Lower Estate, Joe's Hill, and MacNamara.
He underscored that upgrading the territory's capital is essential so that it looks, feels, and operates like a contemporary hub capable of meeting the demands of residents and visitors alike. While infrastructure and urban beautification remain central to his platform, Vanterpool stressed that his campaign will also address pressing social and economic issues.
He noted that residents across District Four are facing growing pressures related to affordable housing, quality education, and the rising cost of living, which he believes must be prioritised by any district representative. Addressing the performance of the current Fourth District Representative, Luce Hodge-Smith, Vanterpool remarked that visible shortcomings remain across the constituency.
While acknowledging that Hodge-Smith may have tried her best, he stated that the district has not seen the progress residents anticipated. Widely referred to as the "Action Man" during his prior years in public office, Vanterpool expressed confidence that voters will give him the opportunity to reclaim the seat, raise the standard of living, and deliver on his promise to rebuild and modernise the heart of Tortola.
