VI Prepares For ShakeOut Earthquake Drill
Residents across the Virgin Islands are being encouraged to test their emergency preparedness by taking part in the upcoming ShakeOut earthquake exercise. The drill aims to ensure individuals, schools, and businesses practice life-saving response procedures in the event of a sudden seismic event.
Residents, businesses, and schools across the Virgin Islands are gearing up to participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, a territory-wide readiness exercise designed to enhance public safety and emergency response. Disaster management officials continue to emphasize that because earthquakes occur without warning, routine practice is essential for building muscle memory and reinforcing confidence in emergency action plans.
The annual exercise provides an organized platform for the public to test disaster preparedness protocols and identify potential hazards in their homes and workplaces. Located in a seismically active zone near major tectonic boundaries in the northeastern Caribbean, the Virgin Islands regularly experiences minor tremors.
While most go unnoticed, the risk of a major earthquake remains a constant reality for the territory. Preparedness officials stress that proactive drills dramatically reduce the likelihood of injuries when a real tremor strikes. Participants during the drill are urged to practice the internationally recognized self-protection sequence: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
This involves dropping immediately to hands and knees, taking cover beneath a sturdy piece of furniture such as a desk or table, and holding on until simulated shaking subsides. If protective shelter is unavailable, individuals are advised to crouch against an interior wall while protecting their head and neck with their arms.
In addition to the physical drill, the exercise serves as a timely reminder for residents to secure heavy furniture, review family emergency plans, refresh emergency supply kits, and ensure proper communication strategies are in place. Community members across Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke are encouraged to register their participation and make earthquake preparedness a priority throughout the year.
