Virgin Gorda Cruise Tender Dock Moves Forward
The BVI Ports Authority is advancing plans to build a dedicated cruise tender dock and reception facility on Virgin Gorda. The project aims to ease congestion at the local marina by routing arriving cruise visitors directly to a secure staging site. A public town hall meeting will be held on August 31 to share project specifics with the community.
The British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) is moving forward with major plans to develop a dedicated cruise ship tender dock on Virgin Gorda, aiming to streamline maritime arrivals and significantly enhance visitor processing. The project site, which has been under the ownership of the Ports Authority since 2020, has undergone demolition to make way for extensive marine and civil improvements.
Under the proposed operational overhaul, arriving cruise ship tenders will bypass the local commercial marina and dock directly at this specialized waterfront location. Contracts have been formally signed to repair and restore the existing dock infrastructure, which has suffered heavy wear and weather-related deterioration over past years.
Once rehabilitated, the facility will feature a temporary reception terminal capable of safely and efficiently handling passenger arrivals and departures. Wheatley, BVIPA Security Manager Dave Smith outlined key components of the development. In addition to passenger processing, the grounds will house a dedicated transport staging zone where local tour operators and taxi drivers can smoothly collect and return cruise guests. Smith noted that the entire complex is being designed in strict accordance with international maritime security standards.
The integration of a secure access checkpoint will regulate perimeter security, govern passenger flows, and manage vehicle dispatching. This setup is expected to relieve heavy operational pressure on nearby commercial jetties during high-volume cruise calls. A Ninth District town hall meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 31, at 5:30 PM at the St Mary’s Episcopal Church Hall. Residents, tour operators, and community stakeholders are encouraged to attend and participate in discussions surrounding the island's evolving maritime infrastructure.
