Authorities say the Department of Waste Management led a rapid, coordinated response alongside the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service, the BVI Airports Authority, the Water and Sewerage Department and local water truck operators. Those agencies worked to suppress the fire and secure the site, and the Ministry extended its thanks to the responding teams and to the Virgin Gorda community for its patience and cooperation during the incident.
Site conditions will remain under continuous monitoring by the Department of Waste Management, the release added. Officials said additional updates will be provided if necessary, and residents are encouraged to check with local authorities before visiting the landfill or arranging bulk waste drop-offs.
Health and safety officials reminded residents—particularly those with respiratory conditions, the elderly, young children and pregnant women—to avoid prolonged exposure to lingering smoke. Anyone who experiences coughing, shortness of breath, eye irritation or other respiratory symptoms after visiting the area is advised to seek medical attention promptly.
