Virgin Gorda Residents Receive Hurricane Care Packages
Vulnerable residents on Virgin Gorda have received essential hurricane relief packages containing food and water to bolster disaster preparedness. The outreach initiative was led by Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent Wheatley alongside community partners and volunteers. Residents are also being urged to take proactive measures and report any vulnerable neighbours who may need assistance.
Vulnerable residents on Virgin Gorda have received vital hurricane care packages as part of an ongoing community outreach initiative to ensure all households are prepared for potential severe weather during the Atlantic hurricane season. The distribution effort was spearheaded by Minister for Health and Social Development and Ninth District Representative Honourable Vincent O.
Each care package was stocked with essential dry goods, canned food items, and clean drinking water designed to provide immediate relief and bolster household preparedness. Honourable Wheatley highlighted the positive impact of the initiative, noting that seeing the smiles and gratitude on residents' faces was deeply heartwarming.
He emphasised that ensuring the safety and comfort of senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and low-income families remains a top priority for his ministry and the community as a whole. With the Atlantic hurricane season underway, disaster preparedness authorities and forecasters continue to urge residents across the Virgin Islands not to become complacent.
Projections from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicate an active season, with forecasts predicting 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 major hurricanes across the Atlantic basin. Minister Wheatley reiterated the importance of proactive measures, encouraging all community members who are able to secure their homes, assemble emergency kits, and stock up on necessary provisions well in advance of any impending storms.
To ensure no one is left behind, the Minister is urging the public to identify any vulnerable individuals who may have been overlooked during this recent distribution. Residents who know of neighbours or relatives requiring support are encouraged to contact his office directly at 468-9418.
