Virgin Gorda Westerly Coast Road Closure
Residents have closed a section of Virgin Gorda’s westerly coast road after it became unsafe. Motorists are advised to use the East Coast Road and follow temporary signage while remedial works are awaited.
Community members on Virgin Gorda have taken precautionary measures to close a stretch of the island’s westerly coast road after sections of the carriageway were judged unsafe for vehicular traffic. Large boulders and reflective cones now block the road from just after the Nail Bay cattle grid near Long Bay to just before the Virgin Gorda sign, preventing drivers from unknowingly entering the hazardous area.
Local residents and community representatives say the closures are temporary but necessary for public safety while they await formal remedial works. In the interim, motorists — including residents, service providers and visitors — are being advised to use the east coast road along the Atlantic side for travel to North Sound, Hog Heaven and the Virgin Gorda sign.
To guide road users, temporary signage will be installed at key access points. At the Mango Bay entrance notices will warn that there is no access to the Virgin Gorda sign and Hog Heaven via the westerly coast road and will direct drivers to the East Coast Road. Additional signs at Tyrone’s Creative Concrete batching plant will advise that the westerly coast route does not provide access to Nail Bay, Mahoe Bay or Spanish Town.
Officials and community leaders emphasise that many residents already know about the compromised section, but visitors and taxi drivers arriving on the island may not. Drivers unfamiliar with local routes are urged to follow the temporary signs, reduce speed on alternate roads, and plan extra travel time while the detour is in effect.
The community statement thanked residents and visitors for their cooperation and patience, noting: “We continue to await the start of remedial works. Our safety is paramount, and we thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding as we work together to keep Virgin Gorda safe.” Motorists should remain alert for additional updates from local authorities and community groups about the timeline for repairs and any changes to traffic management.
