Virgin Islanders Join Forces in 'Walk Against
September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, aimed at raising awareness and challenging the stigma surrounding dementia. In the British Virgin Islands, community organizations including the Rotary and Lions Clubs collaborated with the VI Alzheimer's Association to decorate De Castro Street and host a 'Walk Against Dementia', promoting solidarity and support for those affected.
Every September, the global community comes together to observe World Alzheimer’s Month, a period dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and challenging the misconceptions surrounding all forms of dementia. This year, with the theme 'Ask About Dementia', the initiative encourages open dialogue and the sharing of knowledge to foster well-informed communities capable of providing robust support and care to individuals and families navigating the challenges of dementia.
In the British Virgin Islands, the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias has been marked by a unique collaboration among local community organizations. The Rotary and Lions Clubs, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association (VIAA), have taken a proactive step to commemorate World Alzheimer’s Month.
On Saturday, August 30, 2025, these organizations united to adorn De Castro Street with decorations aimed at shining a light on dementia, in an effort to dissolve the stigma often associated with the condition within the Virgin Islands community. This year’s theme, 'Ask About Dementia', seeks to empower Virgin Islanders to engage in meaningful conversations about dementia, thereby enhancing the collective understanding and support for those affected.
The 'Walk Against Dementia', one of the key activities for the month, symbolizes the community’s solidarity and commitment to enhancing awareness, compassion, and action in the fight against this disease. Such initiatives are vital in building a supportive environment where individuals with dementia, along with their families, feel valued and understood.
The VIAA, along with its partners, is at the forefront of this noble cause, tirelessly working to ensure that the spotlight remains on dementia not just during World Alzheimer’s Month, but throughout the year. By fostering a community that is informed and empathetic, the VIAA hopes to mitigate the challenges faced by those affected by dementia and promote a more inclusive society.
As the British Virgin Islands continue to rally in support of individuals and families dealing with dementia, the message is clear: through education, understanding, and community action, it is possible to break down the barriers and change the narrative around dementia. The efforts of the VIAA, alongside the Rotary and Lions Clubs, underscore the power of community in making a significant difference in the lives of those touched by this condition.
