Virgin Islands Mourns K’moi Walters
The British Virgin Islands recorded its first homicide of 2026 after 26-year-old K’moi Walters was fatally shot in Huntum’s Ghut in the early hours of July 6 and later died at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has appealed to the public for information, saying detectives from its Major Incident Team, supported by specialist units, are actively pursuing multiple lines of inquiry. The RVIPF reiterated on July 8 that even information which seems insignificant could prove crucial and asked anyone with tips to contact the Intelligence Unit at 368-9512 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-8477 (TIPS).
ROAD TOWN, Tortola — The British Virgin Islands recorded its first homicide of 2026 after a man was fatally shot in Huntum’s Ghut in the early hours of July 6, authorities confirmed. The victim has been identified as K’moi Walters, 26. According to police and local reports, Walters was transported to the Dr.
Orlando Smith Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. On July 8 the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) issued a public appeal for information, saying detectives from its Major Incident Team, supported by other specialist units, are leading the investigation. The RVIPF statement said investigators have conducted extensive interviews and are actively pursuing numerous lines of inquiry as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting (VINO).
The force stressed that even details that may seem insignificant could prove crucial to advancing the investigation and asked anyone with information to contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9512. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 (TIPS), the RVIPF said in its July 8 release (VINO).
Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool and the entire RVIPF extended sincere condolences to Walters’ family and loved ones in the same notice. The RVIPF thanked the public for its support and cooperation as detectives continue their enquiries, and reiterated their commitment to identifying those responsible and bringing them to justice (RVIPF/VINO).
The fatal shooting has stunned residents, coming on Virgin Islands Day — a time traditionally reserved for celebrating the Territory’s heritage and unity. Fifth District Representative Kye Rymer described the death as a heartbreaking loss for Walters’ family and the wider community.
Rymer paid tribute to Walters as a devoted father to his young son, Kyrie, and extended condolences to Walters’ mother, Tasha, and the wider family (Guavaberry). "K’moi had a full life ahead of him," Rymer said, urging residents who may know anything about the incident, even seemingly minor details, to speak with investigators.
Community leaders and residents have echoed calls for calm, community cooperation, and strengthened violence-prevention efforts in the wake of the killing. The shooting ended a stretch in which the Territory had gone more than six months without a recorded murder, a fact that has intensified calls for public assistance and ongoing dialogue between residents and law enforcement.
The RVIPF said the investigation remains active and that further updates will be provided as detectives gather more information from witnesses and ongoing enquiries (VINO/Guavaberry).
