The Virgin Islands joined the global observance of World Obesity Day this week as the Ministry of Health and Social Development called on residents to take practical steps toward healthier living under the campaign theme, "8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity," according to a government press release.

Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley said obesity remains one of the most pressing public health concerns in the Territory and a major contributor to chronic non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, certain cancers and stroke. "Obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges facing the Virgin Islands today.

It is affecting our families, our workforce, and our healthcare system. We must take intentional steps to improve our lifestyles and protect our future," he said (BVI Government). Honourable Wheatley noted that changes in diet and reduced physical activity over time have contributed to the increase in obesity and related chronic diseases. "We have moved away from many of the traditional practices that once supported healthy living.

We must now be more mindful of our food choices, remain physically active, and make use of the tools available to help us live healthier lives," he added, stressing that addressing obesity requires both national action and individual responsibility. Public Health Nutritionist Patrice Maduro encouraged residents to start with simple, sustainable changes. "Simple actions such as reducing sugary drinks, choosing healthier foods, and staying physically active can make a significant difference in preventing obesity and improving overall health," Maduro told residents (BVI Government).

To support healthier choices, the ministry is promoting locally tailored resources. The Virgin Islands Eat Well Guide offers practical guidance on balanced nutrition using familiar local foods. In addition, the ministry is strengthening the Food and Nutrition Surveillance Programme, advancing school feeding guidelines, and expanding nutrition assessments among the elderly to better target prevention and care across all age groups (BVI Government).

Officials warned that rising obesity has wider consequences for the Territory, including diminished quality of life for residents, increased absenteeism, reduced workforce productivity, and mounting pressure on hospitals and community health services. The ministry framed the World Obesity Day observance as a reminder that the most important reasons to act are the Territory's children, families and future generations.

Residents are encouraged to consult the Eat Well Guide and speak with local health providers about nutrition and activity plans that fit their lives. The Ministry of Health and Social Development reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and promoting health through effective policies, sustainable programmes and strategic partnerships aimed at building a healthier, more resilient Virgin Islands (BVI Government).
