Natalio Wheatley, leading a high-level public and private sector delegation, has recorded major achievements during the territory's inaugural Financial Services Trade Mission to India. The four-city mission spanning New Delhi, GIFT City in Gujarat, Mumbai, and Bengaluru aims to reinforce bilateral relations, promote the Virgin Islands as a jurisdiction of choice for Indian enterprises, and establish enduring partnerships across financial services, fintech, and investment.

Premier Wheatley characterized the mission as a historic moment for the territory, noting that the BVI has brought the full weight of its government and private sector to India to tell its story and build long-term economic partnerships. He emphasized that as the world's fastest-growing major economy, India represents a vital market where the Virgin Islands is ready to serve as a trusted, reliable gateway for international business expansion.

The mission builds on formal relations established in September 2025 through His Excellency Mayank Joshi, India's High Commissioner to Jamaica and Non-Resident Consul to the Virgin Islands. During earlier high-level discussions in New Delhi, Premier Wheatley met with India's Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, to explore cooperation in finance, taxation, and economic policy, describing the meeting as central to the mission's objectives.

Delegation members also held talks with the Department of Financial Services and the Central Board of Direct Taxes, while Junior Minister Lorna Smith met with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade as well as India's International Customs Division. To raise the territory's commercial profile, the delegation engaged major financial publications, including the India Business Law Journal and Mint.

Premier Wheatley reminded industry leaders that BVI financial structures have supported Indian businesses since the early 2000s, historically accounting for roughly 17 percent of India's outward investment flows within a decade of its early reforms by facilitating access to foreign capital, technology, and expertise.

At GIFT City, India's flagship International Financial Services Centre, the delegation met with Executive Director Shri Pradeep Ramakrishnan to explore opportunities in international banking, fintech, asset management, and reinsurance. The session produced several concrete outcomes, including an invitation for the BVI to participate in the Global Securities Markets Conference in February 2027, discussions on captive insurance partnerships, and preliminary talks on a formal Memorandum of Understanding.

In exchange, BVI Finance invited Indian delegates to attend FinTech On The Seas 2027. The New Delhi and GIFT City legs culminated in the BVI-India Trade Mission Roadshow themed 'A Strategic Partnership for India's Global Expansion.' The delegation—comprising representatives from the Government of the Virgin Islands, the Financial Services Commission, BVI Finance, the BVI Hong Kong Office, and roughly 15 private sector firms—is now progressing through Mumbai and Bengaluru to conclude the roadshow.
