Virgin Islands Sees Surge in Teaching Talent

In a significant stride towards enhancing education in the Virgin Islands, the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports has announced notable improvements in the recruitment and retention of teachers, thanks to the 'Let’s Teach VI' initiative and expanded opportunities for professional development.
This year, the initiative welcomed 12 new teacher trainees, a number that surpasses figures from previous years, reflecting a growing interest in the teaching profession within the Territory. The increased enthusiasm for teaching roles is evident from the over 200 applications received, signaling a robust future for education in the Virgin Islands.
Moreover, the teacher retention rates have seen a dramatic improvement, with resignations plummeting from 17 in 2023 to just one by May 2025. The Ministry attributes this improvement to a combination of competitive compensation packages and increased opportunities for professional growth, aimed at making the teaching profession more attractive and fulfilling.
Further strengthening the educational framework, more than 30 educators have recently completed certificate programs in teaching and leadership at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, showcasing the Territory's commitment to elevating the quality of education. Additionally, 10 more teachers are currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in arts integration, with financial support from Unite BVI, underlining the collaborative efforts to enhance the educational landscape in the Virgin Islands.
