Virgin Islands to Flourish with Launch of
The Virgin Islands community is set to benefit from three exciting new projects aimed at enhancing the environment and fostering community spirit. These initiatives include a tree-planting campaign, an art competition promoting recycling, and the creation of a new scenic lookout for residents and tourists.
The Virgin Islands is embarking on a journey towards greater community cohesion and environmental stewardship with the unveiling of three innovative projects that promise to beautify the landscape while promoting sustainable practices. Smith, OBE, Territorial At-Large Representative, these initiatives are part of the broader Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Programme, dedicated to fostering community development and resilience across the islands.
The first of these initiatives, 'Roots and Branches: Plant a Tree for the Future,' aims to reforest areas hardest hit by recent hurricanes, including Tropical Storm Ernesto. Karl Dawson, First District Representative, will focus on planting ornamentals that not only prevent soil erosion but also enhance the natural beauty of District One. "I fully support the Roots to Resilience Programme, and the Roots and Branches project complements the beautification efforts already underway in District One," Dawson commented, emphasizing the project's alignment with ongoing district beautification efforts.
Another exciting initiative is the Recyclables Art District Competition and Silent Auction, which seeks to encourage sustainable waste management practices by showcasing the creative potential of recyclable materials. This district-wide competition, featuring both student and adult categories, is set to culminate in a December reveal, with Hon.
Smith expressing enthusiasm for the community's creativity and the unique art pieces anticipated from each district. The third project focuses on enhancing the Anegada beautification project, specifically revitalizing the Graveyard in the Settlement. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Unite BVI and Mr.
Doug Reigels, all necessary materials have been procured, including treated lumber for a durable replacement of the damaged picket fence. This initiative not only aims to transform the cemetery into a beautiful space for community members to pay their respects but also fosters greater community involvement and pride.
To further enrich the Virgin Islands' natural and cultural appeal, a new scenic Lookout is being developed to offer both locals and tourists a safe, environmentally friendly space to enjoy the islands' stunning vistas and learn about their cultural and historical significance. These projects, coupled with the successful Paint the Town Community Beautification Project and the Cultural Dialect and Slang Project, underscore the Virgin Islands' commitment to beautifying its communities while fostering an ethos of resilience and sustainability.
