This initiative marks the first structured cultural exchange program between a UK Overseas Territory and UK schools, which will be delivered as part of the Year 6 curriculum. The initiative was launched by the BVI London Office in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council. Early in the first term, Year 6 students explored the VI’s history and culture, covering topics such as colonization, emancipation, national heroes, and festivals.
They engaged in experiences that included music, dance, storytelling, and traditional foods like cassava bread, coconut and pineapple tarts, and gooseberry stew. This program allows UK students to interact with the history, culture, and global role of a UK Overseas Territory for the first time as part of their school curriculum. The Virgin Islands is paving the way in cultural diplomacy and curriculum inclusion, creating a positive and precedent-setting model for how the stories of Overseas Territories can be shared in British classrooms.
The program will continue over three terms: History & Culture (September 2025), Tourism & Economy (January 2026), and Environment & Sustainability (July 2026). There are plans to extend this program to secondary schools and colleges to enhance engagement on topics such as governance, economy, and environmental stewardship, thereby reshaping how the VI is introduced to future generations of UK citizens.
