Local political observer and commentator Dickson Igwe has issued a call for Virgin Islands voters to reshape the territory's political landscape by demanding strict accountability and consequences at the ballot box. In a recent public commentary, Igwe argued that the core of good governance rests on accountability, equity, and voter-enforced repercussions.
When politicians act without fear of consequences, he noted, national progress is severely compromised, resulting in political impunity that ultimately damages the country's social fabric and economic foundation. Reflecting on the history of the territory, Igwe observed that the British Virgin Islands has experienced a prolonged period of compounding challenges spanning three decades.
He pointed to noticeable deterioration across social services, economic systems, and physical infrastructure over recent years. According to Igwe, the territory has struggled to replicate the focused, visionary leadership once championed by the late Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt, leaving modern development lagging behind.
Igwe also drew comparisons to global geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic shifts, noting how international instability and rising borrowing costs can directly affect small, US dollar-dependent economies like the Virgin Islands through inflation and reduced fiscal flexibility. Looking ahead to the next general election cycle expected around 2027, Igwe emphasized that election periods represent the vital window when governing power shifts back into the hands of the electorate.
However, he expressed concern regarding the current political alternatives available to voters, citing a fragmented opposition and a wide assortment of independent contenders who have yet to present a unified, cohesive roadmap for the country.
