Walwyn: Alliance to Contest Election
Opposition leader Hon. Myron Walwyn announced that he, Hon. Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull and Hon. Stacy “Buddha” Mather will contest the next general election as a unified Alliance, saying concerted pressure from the political establishment has been "fierce and relentless." Walwyn, who was appointed leader of the opposition in March, accused unnamed figures of using intimidation to silence dissent and defended a recent no-confidence motion he brought against the government.
Myron Walwyn said on Wednesday, October 15, that the three-member group he formed in the House of Assembly with Hon. Stacy "Buddha" Mather will contest the next general election as a united Alliance. In a Facebook post reported by Jahphix Television, Walwyn said that since the trio joined forces they have faced "attacks from political oligarchs driven solely by a desire to protect their personal interests and influence" that have been "both fierce and relentless." He accused unnamed elements within the political establishment of attempting to "use intimidation to silence those with different views or approaches," adding: "This must come to an end." Walwyn represents the Sixth District; Turnbull represents the Second District; and Mather holds a territorial at-large seat.
The announcement confirms that the Alliance aims to operate beyond parliamentary cooperation and will present a joint front to voters at the ballot box. Walwyn was appointed leader of the opposition by Governor Daniel Pruce on March 24 after shifts among opposition benches earlier this year that changed the composition of the opposition.
In late July Walwyn tabled an unsuccessful no-confidence motion against Premier Hon. The premier later described the move as a political "flop," while Walwyn defended the effort as a legitimate test of the administration’s performance, citing concerns about spending priorities and basic services—issues he says the Alliance will continue to press.
For BVI residents, the Alliance’s decision to contest the next election together signals a possible reconfiguration of the opposition landscape. A coordinated campaign could consolidate votes in key districts and sharpen debate around public spending, infrastructure and service delivery—topics Walwyn specifically raised.
The Alliance will need to translate their House collaboration into an effective island-wide campaign to challenge established parties and incumbents. Voters can expect the group to outline policy priorities and a campaign strategy as the territory moves closer to the next general election date.
