The Social Development Department is today celebrating National Centenarian Day, paying tribute to the Territory’s seven remarkable living centenarians whose lives represent a century of history, resilience, and community spirit. Enelle Smith, who at 106 years old is the oldest living centenarian in the Territory.
Evelyn Hodge (102), the Territory’s only male centenarian, Mrs. Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, extended heartfelt congratulations to the centenarians, stating “Our centenarians are living treasures who have contributed to building the Virgin Islands as we know it today.
Their wisdom, courage, and love for family and community have been guiding lights for generations. On this National Centenarian Day, we salute them for the lives they have lived and the examples they continue to set for all of us.” Acting Chief Social Development Officer, Ms. Shirma George, also reflected on the day’s significance, adding, “Recognising our centenarians is a way of honouring the history and values of the Virgin Islands.
Each one of them carries a unique story of perseverance, faith, and dedication that inspires our younger generations to cherish the past and build a strong future.” This year’s celebration is marked by both joy and reflection, as the Ministry of Health and Social Development and the Social Development Department extend condolences to the family and loved ones of Mrs.
Emogene Creque, who passed away on 7 September 2025 at the age of 106. Creque was a cherished member of the centenarian community and will be remembered for her long life of grace and devotion to her family. The Social Development Department continues its commitment to supporting and celebrating the Territory’s senior citizens, ensuring that their contributions are acknowledged and that they remain connected to the wider community.
