Ministry of Health to Host BVI Wellness
The Ministry of Health and Social Development will host the BVI Wellness Fest on Saturday, November 7, at Queen Elizabeth II Park from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Minister Vincent Wheatley highlighted the initiative as an opportunity to combat chronic noncommunicable diseases by encouraging residents to adopt manageable lifestyle changes and access preventive health screenings.
Chronic noncommunicable conditions including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers continue to plague the Virgin Islands community and place a severe strain on local healthcare infrastructure, Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent Wheatley has warned.
Speaking as the Ministry announced the upcoming BVI Wellness Fest, Hon. Wheatley emphasized that while risk factors associated with chronic illnesses are widespread across the Territory, residents hold substantial power to protect their long-term well-being through everyday personal choices and early medical intervention.
The BVI Wellness Fest is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Queen Elizabeth II Park. Organized as part of the Ministry's ongoing BVI Moves campaign, the initiative seeks to promote healthier lifestyles and empower residents to become active participants in managing their personal health.
Minister Wheatley noted that the festival encourages the community to embrace preventive care before serious medical problems develop. He stressed that lasting wellness does not require individuals to overhaul their entire routine overnight, but often begins with accessible daily adjustments.
According to the Minister, taking a walk after work, selecting water over sugary beverages, adding fresh fruits and vegetables to daily meals, monitoring blood pressure regularly, managing stress, and securing adequate rest are all small choices that make a meaningful difference over time.
He also urged members of the public to know their vital health numbers and seek professional medical attention early. Designed as an interactive, family-friendly gathering rather than a standard health fair, the festival will feature physical activity sessions, healthy food tastings, music, and mental wellness support.
Attendees will also have direct access to free preventive health screenings, nutrition education, massage therapy, and chiropractic care. Honourable Wheatley extended an open invitation to individuals, families, civic organizations, and local workplaces across the Virgin Islands to attend the event, connect with community resources, and take proactive steps toward building a healthier and more resilient Territory.
