WHO IS REALLY BEING REPRESENTED IN THE UK WHEN THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IS NOT HEARD⁉️ The British Virgin Islands are not the only Overseas Territory of the UK, but unlike other BOTs such as the Cayman Islands, Independence from the United Kingdom is one the BVIs main topics whenever its Premier meets with CARICOM and UN bodies.
One of the major concerns for the Cayman Islands, as it should be for the BVI is Economic Stability and Financial Sector Confidence. In the Cayman Islands, the financial services industry makes up a large part of the local economy., Just as it does in the BVI. Residents of the BVI are much concerned that Independence would cause a loss of confidence in the jurisdiction.
But BVI leaders seem hell bent on pursuing Independence even without the expressed wishes of the people. Like other BOTs the BVI depends on the UK for international security and can count on the UK in times of crises such as national disasters like what happened in 2017 with Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Also, a shift away from British oversight could lead to a loss in investor confidence. The BVI would need to find new sources of income to maintain a sense of security. Benefits of the UK are mainly in its Relationship: The association with the UK provides an image of legal and political security for international investors.
Grave Concerns: While the people of the BVI are pro-self-sufficiency, and have enjoyed internal self-governance since the 1970s, it is a growing concern among citizens that the current Government leader is single-handedly maneuvering for Independence. The people are of the view that this is a legacy project for the Premier who wants to be seen as a national hero.
Recent moves by the Cabinet include removing some of the key recommendations from the Constitutional Review report, and substituting them with requests for less power of the UK representative and more power for members of the House of Assembly. While on the surface this may seem like a noble attempt at more self-sufficiency privileges, in essence it does not show any respect for the relationship between the Territory and the UK.
It also evokes a sense a fear among citizens that local leaders are exhibiting signs of creating a dictatorship to replace democracy. Current talks in the UK on Constitutional review, without the people's request for term limits, retirement age and recall provision regarding members of the House of Assembly leaves a void in any meaningful change where the people are concerned.
It is the view of local observers that the Legislators are only representing themselves, not the aspirations of the people. #focusforward #leadershipmatters #democracymatters
