Willock Eyes Contested Third District Seat
Former House Speaker Julian Willock has announced his ambition to contest the Third Electoral District on the Virgin Islands Party ticket, though his nomination remains unconfirmed. With incumbent Deputy Premier Julian Fraser yet to rule out another run and opposition candidates already selected, the constituency is shaping into a dynamic political battleground.
Former House of Assembly Speaker Julian Willock has added fresh intrigue to the Virgin Islands political landscape by announcing his ambition to contest the Third Electoral District. Willock aims to secure the Virgin Islands Party nomination, though the party congress has not yet officially confirmed his candidacy.
The Third District has been represented continuously since 1999 by Julian Fraser, who currently serves as Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development. Fraser has consistently dismissed suggestions that he must step down, recently stating at a community event that he still has unfinished work for his constituents.
His ultimate decision on whether to pursue re-election or retire will heavily influence the race's direction. Opposition parties have already positioned their contenders for the upcoming election cycle. The National Democratic Party has ratified Aaron Parillon, who has campaigned in the district in prior elections, while the People’s Leadership Movement has put forward retired public officer Clifton Forbes.
Both contenders are actively engaging residents on key community priorities, including public infrastructure, reliable water distribution, housing, and youth opportunities. Willock's bid revives memories of previous party selection processes, including his unsuccessful 2019 attempt to secure a spot on the VIP At-Large slate.
Despite speculation regarding party support, Willock has insisted he will follow the party's formal democratic processes and will not abandon the VIP if his bid faces resistance. With general elections constitutionally due by 2027, the Third District race remains one of the most closely watched contests across the Territory.
The final lineup will depend on whether the VIP endorses Willock, how Fraser concludes his political timeline, and how effectively opposition candidates connect with district voters.
