Work Begins on Long Look Social Home
Construction has started on the Long Look Social Home Complex, a new facility designed to provide structured accommodation and support for chronically homeless and economically vulnerable people. The project, led by Island Concrete Managing Director Dion K. Crabbe, is intended to complement the Safe Haven Transitional Centre and strengthen the Territory’s social protection framework.
Construction has officially begun on the Long Look Social Home Complex in the heart of the Long Look community, government officials confirmed. Crabbe, Managing Director of Island Concrete Limited, aims to provide structured accommodation and comprehensive support services for chronically homeless individuals and persons experiencing severe social and economic hardship.
Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) described the facility as a tangible expression of compassion, saying it will reflect how the Territory treats those facing hardship and vulnerability. He highlighted the symbolic importance of siting the first facility of its kind in Long Look, calling the community “historic” and “proud and resilient.” The Premier added that local involvement in construction was intentional so residents would take ownership, help maintain the facility, and ensure it remains a place of dignity and care.
Officials said the Long Look Social Home Complex is designed to act as a critical next step after the Safe Haven Transitional Centre by offering rehabilitative services, reintegration support and pathways to independent living. By linking transitional care with longer-term structured accommodation, the government intends to strengthen the Territory’s broader social protection framework and reduce chronic homelessness.
The project team and government delegation that visited the site included Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL); Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Kye M. Mather (AL); and Honourable Karl Dawson (R1). Their presence signals cross‑portfolio support for the initiative, which touches on housing, social services and community development.
Local contractors and workers from Long Look are participating in the build, reflecting the government’s stated aim to create local employment opportunities through the project and to foster community stewardship of the facility once it opens. Officials emphasised that the Long Look Social Home Complex is not intended merely as shelter but as a supportive environment focused on rehabilitation, dignity and reintegration.
As construction progresses, residents can expect further announcements about timelines, admission criteria and how the new facility will coordinate with existing services such as the Safe Haven Transitional Centre.
